To connect your compatible Canon digital camera with a Windows XP pre-installed computer via USB cable, you need to install the appropriate USB WIA driver on your computer.

This section does not apply for the following cameras: PowerShot SD10, PowerShot A80, PowerShot G5, PowerShot S50, PowerShot S400, PowerShot A70, PowerShot A60 and PowerShot A300.


Installing the USB WIA Driver

Note: If you have previously installed a USB TWAIN driver for your camera, it must be uninstalled first before installing the USB WIA Driver. See Section 1.1.2.1 for instructions on uninstalling the USB TWAIN driver.
Note: Users of Windows XP Professional must first log in as an administrator to install programs.

For all customers of PowerShots not listed further below

Download the appropriate WIA driver that matches your camera model.
Double-click the downloaded file to expand and generate an uncompressed folder on your PC.
Open the uncompressed folder and double-click setup.exe to begin installation.
Once the installation has finished, attach the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port and the camera's Digital Terminal, and set the camera to Replay mode.
The driver will be installed on your computer automatically


For customers of PowerShot Pro90 IS, PowerShot G1, PowerShot S100 Digital ELPH, PowerShot S20, PowerShot S10


Download USB WIA 3.9.1.exe.
Double-click the downloaded file to expand and generate an uncompressed folder on your PC.
Open the uncompressed folder and double-click setup.exe in the folder to begin installation.
Attach the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port and the camera's Digital Terminal, and set the camera to Replay mode.
The Found New Hardware Wizard will start automatically, and select [Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)] and click the [Next] button.
Select [Search for the best driver in these locations], check [Include this location in the search] only, then click the [Browse] button.
In the Browse For Folder window, select C:/Program Files/Canon/DC USB WIA/Camera1/ by clicking [My Computer], [Local Disk (CSmile], [Program Files], Canon], [DC USB WIA], [Camera1].
If the driver you are installing is USB WIA Driver 3.9.1, a warning message will appear. However the driver can be used with Windows XP stably. Therefore click [Continue Anyway] to proceed with the installation.
The driver will be installed on your computer.

Uninstalling the USB WIA Driver

Attach the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port and the camera's Digital Terminal, and set the camera to Replay mode.
If an application program such as ZoomBrowser EX starts, close it. If a window opens, cancel it.
Click the [Start] menu and click [Control Panel].
In the [Control Panel], click the [Printers and Other Hardware] icon.
Click the [Scanners and Cameras] icon.
Select the icon of your camera model, right-click on the icon of your camera and select [Delete]. Then close the window.
Click the [Start] menu and select [All Programs], [Canon Utilities], [Digital Camera USB WIA Driver], and [USB WIA Driver Uninstall]. Then the uninstall procedure will start.

USB WIA Driver

USB TWAIN Driver


The USB TWAIN Driver is not compatible with Windows XP. If the driver was installed on your computer, it must be uninstalled with the following procedures before installing the USB WIA Driver, which is the Windows XP compatible driver.

Uninstalling the USB TWAIN Driver

Attach the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port and the camera's Digital Terminal, and set the camera to Replay mode.
If an application program such as ZoomBrowser EX starts, close it. If a window opens, cancel it.
Click the [Start] menu and select [Control Panel].
Click the [Printers and Other Hardware] icon.
Click the [Scanners and Cameras] icon.
Select the icon of your camera model, right-click on the icon of your camera and select [Delete]. Then close the window.
Click the [Start] menu and select [All Programs], [Canon Utilities], [Digital Camera USB Driver], and [USB Driver Uninstall]. Then the uninstall procedure will start.


Error Notices

Image Display Error Notice

When you perform the following operation on picture data, shot by Canon digital cameras and stored directly on a CF card, using Windows Explorer on a PC in which Windows XP Home Edition / Windows XP Professional Edition (Windows XP hereafter) is installed, the Exif picture data which is attached to the image data, is changed. In this case, errors related to the display of the thumbnail image and some software functions may occur both on Canon digital cameras and their enclosed software utilities (ZoomBrowser EX, PhotoStitch, etc.).

-Operation
Select "Picture File"->Click "Rotate Counter Clockwise" or "Rotate Clockwise" Button (on the bottom of the Preview Screen)
Select "Picture File" >Select "Rotate Counter Clockwise" or "Rotate Clockwise" Button (by right clicking on the Menu)
Select "Simple" display on the "Summary" tab of picture file "Property" >Click "Apply" or "OK"

*Note 1:
After the above operations, the Exif picture data is changed and cannot be restored.
We recommend that you back up the original picture file before proceeding with the operations listed above.
*Note 2:
Even if the Exif picture data is damaged, the image data remains intact and the file can still be opened and used in most image editing applications such as Adobe™ Photoshop.

CF Card Formatting Error Notice

When a CF card with capacity greater than 32MB is formatted in Windows®XP, by default, it will choose to format that card with a higher capacity file system. This file system is not supported in the camera models listed below.

EOS D30, PowerShot Pro90 IS, PowerShot Pro70, PowerShot G2, PowerShot G1, PowerShot S20, PowerShot S10, PowerShot S330, PowerShot S300, PowerShot S200, PowerShot S110, PowerShot S100, PowerShot A50, PowerShot A40, PowerShot A20, PowerShot A10, PowerShot A200, PowerShot A100, PowerShot A5, PowerShot A5 Zoom, PowerShot 350 and PowerShot 600/600N.

Before formatting a CF card with capacity greater than 32MB in Windows®XP, change the "File System" menu selection to "FAT" in the Windows XP formatting window.

If you use a CF card that has been formatted with the higher capacity file system on a Canon digital camera that does not support that system, one of the following messages will appear on the LCD of the camera and you cannot shoot a picture:
"No image", "CF card error!" or "CF card full". (Messages are different according to the camera model.)

If you format a CF Card using anything other than the "FAT" file system, you can re-format it again in your Canon digital camera. If in-camera formatting fails, remove and re-insert the CF Card into the camera, and then format it again.

Canon has participated in the Designed for Windows XP logo program of Microsoft and has obtained the Designed for Windows XP logo with the following digital cameras;

PowerShot G2 Black, PowerShot S330 Digital ELPH, PowerShot S200 Digital ELPH, PowerShot A100, PowerShot A200, PowerShot A40, PowerShot S40, PowerShot S30, PowerShot G2, PowerShot S300 Digital ELPH, PowerShot S110 Digital ELPH, PowerShot A20, PowerShot A10.

Note: PowerShot G2, PowerShot S300 Digital ELPH, PowerShot S110 Digital ELPH, PowerShot A20, and PowerShot A10 digital cameras shipped before October 2001 could not get the Designed for Windows XP logo and XP compatible drivers were not bundled in the package. Customers whose digital cameras do not have a Designed for Windows XP logo sticker on the packaging are requested to download and use the Windows XP compatible driver.

Note: The Designed for Windows XP logo refers to the digital camera and its driver only.
